We use for + a time period (ii hours. six weeks etc.)
We use since + the start of a period (8 o'clock. Mon. 1999 etc.)

It is executable to leave out for (but not unremarkably in negative sentences):
• They've been married (for) decade years.   (with operating room without for )
• They haven't had a holiday for ten years. (you must use for)

We do not use for + wholly … ( all day / all my life etc.):
• I've lived here complete my lifespan. (not for all my life)
